Florida Homestead Exemption - Amendment 9 - First Responders and Military Veterans and Surviving Spouses

Florida homestead Exemption is a way to reduce the tax on your
primary residence and as part of the "save our homes" residents may take additional exemptions for being a widow, widower, blind person, partially disabled and fully disabled.  You can learn more information about the Florida homestead exemption here.

Amendment 9 of the Florida Homestead Exemption allows Military Veterans and First Responders surviving spouses to receive a 100% exemption for their service.  Prior to this amendment only fully disabled residents who were living, received 100% exemption.

The "Fallen Heroes Family Tax Relief Act" if for the hero and their surviving spouses providing:
     A) A military veteran who died from service-connected causes while on active duty as a member of the US armed forces.
     B) A First Responder who died in the line of duty.
*First Responders include: law enforcement officers, correctional officers, firefighter, emergency medical technician or paramedic employed by the state or any political subdivision of the state**
