TO: Summertree Residents -- Immediate Action Needed
FROM: SUMMERTREE WATER ALLIANCE --Ann Marie & the Taskforce Committee
DATE: April 3, 2014
SUBJECT: (Part 1) Water Legislation Issue -- (Part 2) Utility Water Survey

PART 1: The Florida Legislature is right now considering several measures that could impact our efforts to hold Utilities, Inc. accountable for the poor quality water delivered in Summertree. One measure, sponsored by Senator Wilton Simpson in the Senate (SB 272) and Representative Amanda Murphy in the House (HB 1321), would empower this community to file a petition with the PSC compelling Utilities, Inc. to solve water quality problems here or risk fines, penalties or Utilities, Inc. could even lose the right to continue serving Summertree. We urge you to call or email our legislators to support passage of the measure contained in SB 272 and HB 1321. Their contact information is:
• Sen. Simpson – (850) 487-5018 simpson.wilton.web@flsenate.gov
• Sen. Hays – (850) 487-5011 hays.alan.web@flsenate.gov
• Rep. Corcoran – (850) 717-5037 richard.corcoran@myfloridahouse.gov
• Rep. Murphy – (850) 717-5036 amanda.murphy@myfloridahouse.gov
• Rep. Santiago – (850) 717-5027 david.santiago@myfloridahouse.gov

Unfortunately, another measure, sponsored by Senator Alan Hays in the Senate (SB 1050) and Representative David Santiago in the House (HB 357), which originally contained law changes to begin dealing with high rates and poor water quality provided by private utilities, has been hijacked by Utilities, Inc. and its industry representatives. Both of these bills originally contained well-intentioned measures, but they have been amended to add new provisions that will make it possible for Utilities, Inc. to increase our rates on the mere promise of fixing our water quality problems.
Senator Simpson and Representative Richard Corcoran are working hard to make sure these provisions which would raise our rates do not become law, and that more favorable measures like those contained in Senator Simpson’s SB 272 and Representative Murphy’s HB 1321 take their place. Please take the opportunity to contact Senators Simpson and Hays and Representatives Corcoran, Santiago and Murphy to let them know that Summertree residents oppose the new provisions in Representative Santiago’s HB 357 and Senator Hays’ SB 1050 that make it easier for Utilities, Inc. to raise rates.
SUPPORT: SB 272 / HB 1321
OPPOSE, UNLESS AMENDED: SB 1050 / HB 357
PART 2: - Water Utility Company Survey -- The Summertree Water Alliance recommends you DO NOT PARTICIPATE in their email SURVEY at this time. We are in negotiation with Utilities, Inc. as mandated by the PSC. UIF never approached the taskforce to discuss a survey to date.
Thank you. Please watch for flyers and announcement, things can change quickly
